20/10/2012 · Just trying to help here, I use two of Bruce’s File guides on a daily basis. Perhaps you are putting to much pressure on the spine area of the blade while grinding? Try just putting pressure on the middle of file guide/Blade to the edge area and see if that clears up this problem. I use them for all my fixed blades, paring knife to 3″ tall Chef

Your workhorse is going to be a big flat bastard cut file, I have a 12″ Nicholson black diamond. Next to that my most used file is a 10″ half round followed by an 8″ round file. I also love my second cut 10″ hand file and 10″ smooth cut hand file. Finally, my set of needle files sees a lot of use.

29/03/2014 · As you may know we make file guides and sell them. Some folks havent used one before and other folks never will. I have made many knives without the use of a file guide but since it became so important to do the best work I possibly could I use one on every blade now.
The file guide is a very handy high quality tool that allows the maker to get the best fit possible between the blade shoulder and guard. It also gives great plunge grinds so the left and right side of the blade are exact. I use mine for many other things including “framed” handle bowies, daggers and all size blades from slip joint pen blades up to broad blades that are 2 1/2” wide. With

Can I just take two pieces of blade steel, drill and tap them both with two screws 3″ apart from the other, screw them together, grind a perfectly flat edge against my platen, then heat em up above critical and quench?

This will make the file bite much more aggressively into the steel, but it will leave deep scratches. Removing them with files and sanding paper will yield some additional material removal and if you do not take that into account you will loose some blade height – that is what happened to me with this very knife.
